Hapag-Lloyd Least Exposed as Norfolk Misses Out on China Duty Traffic Surge

Container handling at ports in Virginia, including Norfolk, fell 3% on a year earlier in June, the fifth decline in 2018 so far. A 21% drop in empty container handling was mostly to blame while import growth of just 3% made it the worst performing top 10 port in the country. That underperformance largely resulted from Chinese volumes only rising 6% vs. a national average of 13% ahead of duties that applied from July 6.
