Toyota Cuts Exports, Warns of Duties as Japan’s Big Seven Automakers’ Growth Slows

Japan’s big seven automakers saw a slowdown in exports in May to 6% on a year earlier from 12% in the prior three months. That was the result of a 1% decline by number one exporter Toyota, the first decline since October, as well as a 10% drop in shipments by Nissan. The slowing growth suggests an expectation the sales in overseas markets may also slow. Growth of just 4% in U.S. imports from Japan in May vs. a peak of 8% in February would confirm that thesis.
